The rugged terrain and the thrill of the unknown await you. But before you hit the dusty trails, let’s talk about your budget, which is the backbone of your trip.

Without a clear budget, you could easily lose sight of your expenses. So how can you come up with a well-thought-out budget for your adventure?

Chart Your Course

You must first map out your route and itinerary. Then, count your travel buddies and the number of days you will be off traveling. Now, let’s roll!

Costs
to Fuel the Adventure

You don’t want to run out of fuel in the middle of nowhere or spend more than needed. To come up with a reasonable fuel budget, you can use this formula:

Fuel Budget = (Travel Distance / Fuel Consumption) * Fuel Cost + 20%

  1. Travel Distance: How many kilometres long is your route and back?
  2. Fuel Consumption: How many litres of fuel does your vehicle use per 100 kilometres? Check your vehicle’s manual or use online calculators or apps.
  3. Fuel Cost: You could simply get the average fuel rate along your route.
  4. Allowance: It’s your call, but 20% for extra fuel should be enough to cover emergencies, remote areas, challenging terrain, or fuel uncertainty.

For
a daily budget, just divide your petrol budget by your number of travel days

Save on Fuel by Planning Ahead

Find fuel stations along your route using online tools or fuel station apps. Plan your fuel stops and check the fuel prices at different locations to find the best deals. Here are more ideas to save on fuel:

  • Drive at a steady speed.
  • Avoid sudden stops or accelerating.
  • Pack light to reduce your caravan load.
  • Maintain your tyre pressure.
  • Take advantage of discounts, deals, and rewards.

Some remote areas may have limited or no fuel availability, so fill up ahead or use jerry cans or long-range fuel tanks for extra fuel.

Camping Fees: Rest Easy Without Breaking the Bank

To plan your expenses on campsites and caravan parks you can first determine your overall trip budget. Then, allocate a portion of your budget specifically for camping site fees. Consider your travel duration, distance, and desired level of comfort.

Research Campsite Fees

Use apps like WikiCamps, Anycamp, Camper Mate or Camps Australia Wide, and explore different options: national parks, private caravan parks, free camps, and rest areas. Fees can vary significantly so choose wisely based on your budget and desired level of comfort. See a list of our favourite Australian hidden gems in this article.

Choose Your Campsite Style

Decide on your preferred camping style:

  • Free Camping – free or budget-friendly but may have limited facilities
  • Caravan Parks – often with more amenities but charge higher fees
  • National Parks – fees could vary and some require advance bookings

Calculate Daily Campsite Costs

Determine the number of nights you’ll spend in each campsite. Multiply it by the average daily fee for each category. Consider additional costs such as laundry.

If booking in advance, check for reservation fees. If traveling with pets, enquire about related costs. Just add them all up to get your total campsite budget.

Be Safe, Be Flexible

While budgeting is crucial, always prioritise safety over savings. Don’t compromise on essential facilities or security. But stay flexible with your choices and adjust your budget as needed.

Your Budget for Groceries and Supplies

You could simply base this on your current weekly grocery spending. Divide that by 7 (the number of days in a week), and then divide by the number of your housemates. Now, multiply the result by the number of your caravan travellers, then multiply again by the number of travel days. That can be your total grocery budget, but you should add a little more due to unexpected situations, like higher prices in remote areas.

Your grocery list can include:

  • Essentials like flour, rice, pasta, canned foods, and oats
  • Ingredients for meals you plan to cook
  • Snacks like trail mix, muesli bars, and Tim Tams
  • Fresh fruits and veg (preferably from local markets)
  • Frozen veg as fresh can be hard to find in remote areas
  • Frozen fruit for breakfast smoothies
  • Items that can last longer like carrots, potatoes, and onions
  • Herbs and spices like paprika and oregano
  • Drinking water in cartons
  • Coffee (especially If you’re a caffeine devotee)

Activities and Experiences
Budgeting Bonza

Here are some off-road caravanning tips to help you pack a budget for making unforgettable experiences.

Plan Your Off-Road Caravan Experiences

Different regions offer unique experiences – snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef, hiking in the Flinders Ranges, or stargazing in the outback. Identify must-do activities based on your interests and passions.

Seek Out Savvy Savings

Some activities can be free – like hiking, swimming in waterholes, and stargazing – while others require just a little budget. Look for discounted multi-activity deals or combined tickets for entry fees, tours, and equipment rentals. Consider group getaways so you can share the cost. Enjoy free and discounted events like free festivals, markets, and cultural events. Search for online deals and promotions, early-bird discounts, and off-season activities at lower rates.

DIYing could also cost much less. Invest in basic equipment (snorkelling masks, hiking boots, binoculars) instead of paying rental fees. Cook meals yourself and skip expensive restaurant meals. Organise free or low-cost activities like movie nights under the annexe or board game nights.

Budgeting for Vehicle Repairs and Maintenance

Murphy’s Law applies on the road, so set aside money for unexpected fixes. Budgeting for vehicle repairs and maintenance can help prevent roadside dramas and expenses.

To begin with, grab your vehicle’s manual and get familiar with recommended service intervals, fluid types, and potential trouble spots.

As a rule of thumb, you can have an emergency fund equivalent to 10% of your overall trip budget for repairs and maintenance. Ensure that your budget can cover:

  • A spare tyre and a tyre repair kit
  • Oil changes, filter replacements, and fluid top-ups
  • Off-road caravan gear essentials, tools, and spare parts
  • Unexpected bumps, scrapes, or breakdowns

You can also add a roadside assistance budget if you want.

Staying Connected: Your Phone and Internet Budget

Stay connected but watch those data charges. With a bit of planning, you can transform potential bill shock into budget wins.

Know Your Connection Needs

Research mobile coverage across your planned route. Will you be traversing remote regions with limited signal? Do you need data for navigation, social media updates, or work-related tasks? Understanding your needs can help you choose the right plan.

All of our caravans, including the XTR model, can be upgraded with a mobile phone signal booster to help you stay connected even when you’re off-grid.

Connection Savings

To save on phone and internet expenses, download offline maps, essential apps, and even movies beforehand. Also, disconnect your device as you reconnect with nature or designate phone-free zones or times to truly immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and experiences the outback offers. Utilise free Wi-Fi hotspots at caravan parks, towns, and even cafes.

Bonus Tips

There are many ways to plan for and streamline your budget. Here are a few more ideas:

  • Leave some wiggle room and have a buffer fund for miscellaneous expenses and spontaneous adventures.
  • Track your spending using a budgeting app or spreadsheet.
