The Kiwi Van Life’s Wonderland RV Hornet and F350 at camp at golden hour

The Kiwi Van Life

Family off-road caravan life in a Wonderland RV Hornet

We put our house on the market and it sold in seven days. That’s where our chaos started, because it was an impulse decision and we hadn’t even looked at caravans. At the Perth caravan show, Wonderland RV won us over.

Fourteen months later we decided a year was never going to work and made this a long-term lifestyle. We leave a place with no direction and see where we end up at the end of the day.

We homeschool, and the kids learn so much more out here on the road. Tomorrow isn’t promised, so we live for today.

What got you into caravanning in the first place?

The expectations of society, working big hours and the kids always in before and after school care. It was time to set our priorities straight, and that led us to van life.

What are your go-to meals when caravanning? Do you have any favourite camping recipes that you’d like to share?

Spag bol and a coconut curry chicken with veggies are always an easy winner in our van, but the all-time favourite is our creamy prosciutto carbonara.

What’s your best travel hack?

We all love a good summer hike, but the heat can be horrible. Put baby wipes with some water in a zip-lock bag in the freezer a few hours before, or the night before, and they stay icy cold and cool you down nicely.

What are your must-have caravanning essentials? Any unexpected items that have become indispensable on your travels?

All the water tap fittings. They break, get left behind, and grow legs and wander off.

Questions about The Kiwi Van Life

Who are The Kiwi Van Life?

The Kiwi Van Life are Rorden, Cass, Jed and Lexi, a family who sold their house in seven days and hit the road in a Wonderland RV Hornet. A year was the plan, but after fourteen months they made van life their long-term lifestyle. They homeschool on the road, and say the kids learn so much more out there.

Which family off-road caravan do The Kiwi Van Life have?

The Kiwi Van Life have a Wonderland RV Hornet, a family off-road caravan with a queen bed and dual storage chests, two bunks on the doorside and a desk or café dinette on the roadside. A full ensuite runs across the rear. They picked it up in June 2025. See more family off-road caravans.

What are easy camping recipes for families?

Spag bol and a coconut curry chicken with veggies are The Kiwi Van Life’s easy winners on the road. Their all-time favourite camping recipe is a creamy prosciutto carbonara, and you can cook it at your own camp with the full creamy prosciutto carbonara recipe.

What spare parts should you carry in a caravan?

Carry spare water tap fittings. Asked for their must-have caravanning essentials, The Kiwi Van Life named all the water tap fittings they carry in the van, because fittings break and have a habit of growing legs and wandering off between campsites.

How is the Wonderland RV Hornet built?

The current Hornet is built with a composite one-piece wrap-around front, roof to back, with SPR (self-piercing riveted) aluminium side walls. It sits on a 6-inch by 1950mm A-frame and a double 4+4 inch chassis, and runs a Redarc Alpha 75 system with a 2600W inverter, 800W of solar and a 400Ah battery. See the Hornet range.
