“We sat through lockdowns watching Trip in a Van on YouTube and it sparked something inside of us. We were both working hard in our businesses but were missing the little moments in our children’s day to day lives. We started to research and eventually Kerstin put her foot down and said we are doing this. A crazy idea turned into reality, and we have never looked back.”

After 2 years on the road you get very good at storage. The key is to have enough of what you need and nothing extra. I get overwhelmed when we have too much ‘stuff’. Everything in our van has a use and a home.
Our clothes are stored in baskets in the cupboard with jumpers and selective seasonal items stored in the tunnel boot. Our pantry is stocked with our non-perishables and I store things in Pretty Little Designs push top containers. They keep my food fresh and are sturdy for corrugations to avoid spillage.
Everything having its own place in the van ensures our tiny space remains neat and clutter free.
It depends on where we are and what we have access to. We do the majority of our cooking outside on the BBQ. Our absolute go-to meal is burrito bowls. We use either mince or chicken and sneak in plenty of extra veg and salad that the kids don’t know about! It is quick, easy and delicious.
For us, a must is good quality van with brilliant suspension – we are spoilt in our Wonderland XTR with the latest technology from Cruisemaster. Our suspension is horizon-levelling meaning our set up and pack up is always super easy. With the new Cruisemaster app we can easily level our van using the air-ride suspension and if we find ourselves stuck down a track and need to shift the weight of the van we can do so from the comfort of our car!
We spend most of our time remote and off grid, so we ensure we have lots of solar and batteries. Having an endless power supply is important to us to ensure we can live our lifestyle with the comforts of home!
Inside we have the luxury of space in our van and are able to travel with all of the necessities in life. For us, the coffee machine is essential. We love having the ability to have good quality coffee in beautiful remote locations.
We could not live without our washing machine. With two kids who love to get dirty, it is handy for keeping on top of our daily washing pile.
Starlink is a must for us – we work and educate our children on the road. This allows us to be connected and plan our next trip. We also love turning it off and just being present with each other without reception.
The best thing we have found is ourselves. Travel allows you to be free and let go of societal norms and find your family’s own flow. We have been relishing the opportunity to spend time with each other and watch our children grow and learn.
Our highlight moment of the trip was taking a helicopter ride to the top of Mitchell Falls and hiking out. It was a pivotal moment of our family overcoming fears and seeing mother nature in all her glory from the sky. Whilst on our hike out, Rick and Leo discovered untouched indigenous art hidden off the main hiking track. It will forever be a memory we will all hold close to our heart.
We use a DJI Mavic 3. It has its pros and cons. It is large, making it inconvenient to take on hikes however it is very sturdy in the wind and has a long range on it meaning we can take it far and wide over forests, oceans and land trying to capture amazing scenery.
We love having a drone as it gives a different perspective of the places we visit and allows us to find animals playing in the ocean.
