Inspect Your Ride

Before you set off, a thorough vehicle inspection is crucial to ensure both your tow vehicle and family caravan are in top condition.

Check Your Tow Vehicle

Make sure your trusty tow vehicle is in top shape. Here’s what you need to inspect.

Engine Health

Give your engine some love by checking the oil and filter regularly. Clean oil keeps things running smoothly, avoiding any unexpected hiccups along the way.

Battery Health

Give your battery a quick check-up to make sure it’s charged and ready to go. You don’t want your adventure to start with a “click” instead of a “vroom”!

Tyre Condition

Those tyres are your road companions – and that includes your spare. Check their tread depth and pressure to ensure they’re gripping the road and saving you some fuel. Happy tyres mean happy travels!

Brake System

Make sure your brakes are up to the task. Check fluid levels and pad wear so you can stop on a dime, especially when you’re towing your home on wheels.

Lights and Indicators

! Verify that all your lights and indicators are working perfectly to stay safe and avoid any fines. Plus, it’s always good to be seen!

Mirrors

Adjust those mirrors so you have a crystal-clear view of your caravan and the road behind you. If needed, add some extended mirrors for that extra visibility boost.

Check Your Caravan

Now, let’s get your caravan ready to roll…

Gas System

Give those hoses a once-over for leaks and make sure the cylinders are snug. Gas leaks are no joke—unless you want an impromptu firework show!

Electrical System

Flick on those lights, inside and out, to make they’re working perfectly. You don’t want to be the ghost caravan creeping through the night! (Of course, check your caravan battery as well – a fully charged battery means more fun and less fuss.)

Water System

Check for leaks and secure the tank. A steady water supply is key — unless you’re planning to test your best survival skills.

Waste Water Tank

Empty and clean it out. You don’t want any surprise aromas joining your trip!

Tyres

Just like your trusty tow vehicle, make sure your caravan’s tyres are pumped and ready, including your spare tyre. Flat tyres are a real drag!

Secure Your Tow, Balance the Load

A secure connection between your tow vehicle and caravan, along with proper weight distribution, is key to a smooth journey.

Tow Hitch

Make sure your tow hitch is locked in tight. A solid connection means a smooth and safe journey ahead, so keep everything tight and right.

Safety Chains

Safety chains are your plan B in case the main hitch fails or comes loose. They will keep your caravan attached to your vehicle, so make sure the chains are securely connected and in good shape.

Electrical Connection

Check that the electrical connection between your tow vehicle and your caravan is all systems go. Lights, indicators, and brake lights should be working perfectly.

Weight Distribution

Spread the weight evenly by adjusting the hitch and cargo.  — balance is key to avoid any unexpected swaying!

Brake Controller

Tune your brake controller to match your caravan’s weight. Good brakes are essential—because stopping should never be a guessing game!

Caravan Towing Safety and Security

Let’s make your road trip safe and sound while keeping the vibe high!

Hitch Lock

Pop on a hitch lock to keep thieves at bay and your caravan hitched tight. No one likes a runaway caravan!

Cargo Securing

Secure all your cargo inside. Loose items can turn into flying missiles — let’s keep the action movies on screen!

Emergency Kit

Pack an emergency kit with all the essentials: first aid kit, spare tyre, tools, and a flashlight. Better to be prepared than stranded!

Fire Safety

Make sure your smoke alarms are ready to sound the alarm at the first hint of trouble. Check that your fire extinguisher is on board, working, and everyone knows how to use it. Map out clear evacuation routes and let everyone know how to make a quick and safe exit if needed.

Roadside Assistance

Get coverage for those unexpected breakdowns. A roadside assistance plan is like having a superhero on speed dial!

Stick to the Rules

Knowing and following towing capacities, weight limits, and road rules is a must. Not only does it keep you safe, but it also helps you dodge those pesky fines.

Level-Up your Skills

Towing a caravan is like leveling up your driving game — it needs extra skills, longer stopping distances, and a keen eye on weather and road conditions. Here are more tips:

  • Keep to a maximum speed of 100 km/h.
  • Stick to hard surfaces and use lower gears downhill.
  • Slow down on rough roads and maintain greater distances.
  • Avoid sway by smoothly accelerating, braking, and steering.

Ready, Set, Tow!

To sum it up, a thorough pre-trip checklist is your ticket to safe and confident caravan towing. By checking your vehicle, securing your hitch, balancing your weight, and adding safety measures, you can cruise with ease and enjoy a worry-free adventure.
