Nothing beats the thrill of off-grid caravanning. You get to explore new and remote sites. You can enjoy the freedom of the open road and the challenge of rough tracks.
You rediscover nature in exciting, immersive ways. You can experience new adventures, learn new skills, and face challenges like never before.
So, are you ready to roll?
Make the most of your trip by planning it well. Be flexible in some areas but work most things out ahead of time so you can save time, energy, money, and avoid unnecessary conflicts with your loved ones! Here are some of our planning tips for you…
Australia is huge and offers endless possibilities. Research both popular Australian off-road destinations and lesser-known spots. Here’s how you can choose your destination options:
What you have in mind
What excites you: adrenaline-pumping, calming leisure, or a mix of chill and thrill? Would that be in the outback, on the coast, the mountains, or the rainforest? Ask your travel buddies what their plans are so maybe you can all catch up and have fun together.
When you’ll be traveling
What’s the best time of the year to visit your target sites? Some places are better during certain seasons, depending on the weather, the wildlife, and available activities.
How long you plan to travel
The length of your trip could affect the activities you can include in your itinerary. A longer travel time could be affected by weather changes and add stops for rest and maintenance.
Find the best routes to take using a map or a navigation app. Use caravan trip planning apps that show campsites, attractions, facilities, hike areas, and other activities along your route. Our Wonderlanders use an app called WikiCamps to research about campgrounds suited for caravans.
Also locate possible dump points, water fill stations, and rubbish bins.
Consider these for each leg of your journey:
Enjoy the journey and not just the destination. Stop to admire the scenery. Meet and chat with friendly locals.
Plan your budget depending on these factors:
Add an allowance for unexpected changes, opportunities, and to make room for spontaneity.

Your caravan should match your travel plans. Here’s what you should consider when choosing an off-road caravan:
Your destinations
If you’re after a ‘one night under the stars’ type experience, a basic tent will do. For an off-road adventure on terrains like the Gibb River Road, you’ll need a sturdier mate. If you’ve seen the Wonderland XTR, that’s what we’re talking about – built to last, with top-notch suspension, protection, and electrical systems.
Your packing
There are some essential equipment and accessories you should be taking with you to your off-grid caravanning adventure. Prepare yourself for any situation, and make sure you are safe, connected, and equipped to live off-grid for a while!
In saying that, try to pack smart and light and leave some room for souvenirs and gifts.
Your comfort levels
How much space would you need to feel comfortable traveling for days or weeks with your family? Some luxury caravans or compact hybrids are good for light travel and comfort. Hybrids can be really slick with some amenities and pop-up space. For a long haul, you might need a full-sized caravan with all the bells and whistles.
Your caravan budget
Off-road tough caravans are generally more expensive than regular caravans because they have more features and higher quality materials. Don’t forget to add the ongoing costs like maintenance and insurance.
Your off-road caravan features
What you should look for in an off-road caravan:
When in the process of buying, ask about off-road caravan customisation. Also think about solar panels, water tanks, air conditioning, awnings, storage space, towing capacity, and licence requirements.
Never forget to check your fuel gauge and your tyres pressure before you leave one spot for the other! You can also use an app to find the nearest petrol stations along your route.
Fill up ahead for remote areas that may have limited or no fuel services. Carry extra fuel in jerry cans or approved containers. Make sure they are secured and ventilated properly to avoid leaks or spills.
You may also want to track your fuel consumption and adjust your driving style accordingly… As much fun as it is, driving on rough terrain, uphill, or with a heavy load can increase your fuel usage. So drive more smoothly and steadily (most of the times), close your windows and avoiding sudden stops or abruptly accelerating.
Here are some tips to help you with your water, food, and grocery needs:
In Australia, we have to deal with cyclones, floods and extreme temperatures.
Before leaving home, check the weather forecast and road conditions, so you can prepare for any possible situation. Pack accordingly, as the nights can get really cold in some areas.
Technology can be a game changer. We love to take our dashcam with us to capture amazing scenes or as a backup camera when doing manoeuvres with our caravan. A drone can also be a great tool for taking stunning aerial photos and videos, exploring the surroundings, finding hidden gems, or scouting the path ahead.
If you love digital photography, don’t forget to:
As led back an off-trip sounds, you should never compromise on security. Have loads of fun but do everything safely and look after each other.
An off-road caravan trip is a unique experience and a chance to reconnect with nature, yourself, and your family. You will most probably meet wonderful people along the way, and that’s the beauty of it.
You should be well prepared but remember to savour the moment and be flexible because not everything will go as planned!
