Off-Road Caravanning Tips: Your Ultimate Adventure Roadmap

Make the most of your trip by planning it well. Be flexible in some areas but work most things out ahead of time so you can save time, energy, money, and avoid unnecessary conflicts with your loved ones! Here are some of our planning tips for you…

1. Navigating The Best Australian Off-Road Destinations

Australia is huge and offers endless possibilities. Research both popular Australian off-road destinations and lesser-known spots. Here’s how you can choose your destination options:

What you have in mind

What excites you: adrenaline-pumping, calming leisure, or a mix of chill and thrill? Would that be in the outback, on the coast, the mountains, or the rainforest? Ask your travel buddies what their plans are so maybe you can all catch up and have fun together.

When you’ll be traveling

What’s the best time of the year to visit your target sites? Some places are better during certain seasons, depending on the weather, the wildlife, and available activities.

How long you plan to travel

The length of your trip could affect the activities you can include in your itinerary. A longer travel time could be affected by weather changes and add stops for rest and maintenance.

2. Mapping Out Your Adventure Caravanning Routes

Find the best routes to take using a map or a navigation app. Use caravan trip planning apps that show campsites, attractions, facilities, hike areas, and other activities along your route. Our Wonderlanders use an app called WikiCamps to research about campgrounds suited for caravans.

Also locate possible dump points, water fill stations, and rubbish bins.

Consider these for each leg of your journey:

  • Your comfortable driving time and duration
  • Your fuel stops
  • Road conditions
  • Weather forecasts
  • Possible detours

Enjoy the journey and not just the destination. Stop to admire the scenery. Meet and chat with friendly locals.

3. Budgeting Like a Pro

Plan your budget depending on these factors:

  • Your route and itinerary
  • The number of people in your family
  • The number of your travel days
  • Petrol costs
  • Camping fees
  • Groceries and supplies
  • Activities and experiences
  • Repairs and maintenance
  • Phone and internet

Add an allowance for unexpected changes, opportunities, and to make room for spontaneity.

4. The Art of Off-Road Caravan Selection

Your caravan should match your travel plans. Here’s what you should consider when choosing an off-road caravan:

Your destinations

If you’re after a ‘one night under the stars’ type experience, a basic tent will do. For an off-road adventure on terrains like the Gibb River Road, you’ll need a sturdier mate. If you’ve seen the Wonderland XTR, that’s what we’re talking about – built to last, with top-notch suspension, protection, and electrical systems.

Your packing

There are some essential equipment and accessories you should be taking with you to your off-grid caravanning adventure. Prepare yourself for any situation, and make sure you are safe, connected, and equipped to live off-grid for a while!

In saying that, try to pack smart and light and leave some room for souvenirs and gifts.

Your comfort levels

How much space would you need to feel comfortable traveling for days or weeks with your family? Some luxury caravans or compact hybrids are good for light travel and comfort. Hybrids can be really slick with some amenities and pop-up space. For a long haul, you might need a full-sized caravan with all the bells and whistles.

Your caravan budget

Off-road tough caravans are generally more expensive than regular caravans because they have more features and higher quality materials. Don’t forget to add the ongoing costs like maintenance and insurance.

Your off-road caravan features

What you should look for in an off-road caravan:

  • Caravan off-road capabilities
  • A robust and adjustable suspension system
  • A comfortable and suitable layout
  • Features and amenities
  • Quality, durability, and reliability

When in the process of buying, ask about off-road caravan customisation. Also think about solar panels, water tanks, air conditioning, awnings, storage space, towing capacity, and licence requirements.

5. Journey on a Full Tank

Never forget to check your fuel gauge and your tyres pressure before you leave one spot for the other! You can also use an app to find the nearest petrol stations along your route.

Fill up ahead for remote areas that may have limited or no fuel services. Carry extra fuel in jerry cans or approved containers. Make sure they are secured and ventilated properly to avoid leaks or spills.

You may also want to track your fuel consumption and adjust your driving style accordingly… As much fun as it is, driving on rough terrain, uphill, or with a heavy load can increase your fuel usage. So drive more smoothly and steadily (most of the times), close your windows and avoiding sudden stops or abruptly accelerating.

6. Satisfying Your Appetite

Here are some tips to help you with your water, food, and grocery needs:

  • Bring enough water for drinking, cooking, and washing. A good rule of thumb is to bring at least 5 litres of water per person per day. Also find out in advance where along the route you can get water or connect a hose to a running tap.
  • Choose ingredients that are easy to cook, store, and transport. Bring fresh fruits and vegetables that last longer, and buy canned foods, dried fruits, nuts and crackers, but be creative with delicious caravan recipes like the ones we share on our socials! Also, don’t forget to buy your seasonings, and coffee, tea, etc.
  • Bring treats and snacks for a fun trip. Some chocolate, chips, biscuits, or lollies can go with enjoying the scenery or relaxing by the campfire. Store them in airtight containers to keep them fresh.
  • Use reusable containers, bags, and utensils to reduce waste. Dispose your rubbish properly and recycle when possible.

7. Surviving Nature’s Fury

In Australia, we have to deal with cyclones, floods and extreme temperatures.

Before leaving home, check the weather forecast and road conditions, so you can prepare for any possible situation. Pack accordingly, as the nights can get really cold in some areas.

8. Off-Road Memories

Technology can be a game changer. We love to take our dashcam with us to capture amazing scenes or as a backup camera when doing manoeuvres with our caravan. A drone can also be a great tool for taking stunning aerial photos and videos, exploring the surroundings, finding hidden gems, or scouting the path ahead.

If you love digital photography, don’t forget to:

  • Seize the day and snap photos of the wildlife, the landscape, and the sky.
  • Take unforgettable selfies and group shots with your family and friends.
  • Be creative with your camera. Try different angles, filters, and effects.

Off-Road Caravan Safety Measures for Adventurers

As led back an off-trip sounds, you should never compromise on security. Have loads of fun but do everything safely and look after each other.

  • Keep your loved ones updated with your itinerary and locations, so someone always know where to look for you in case of trouble.
  • Secure your load and lock your caravan doors so nothing flies around or falls out while you’re on the move.
  • Before you go, we recommend you practice reversing, turning, and braking with your caravan attached. It can save you tons of stress later!
  • Stick to the tracks and follow the signs – no bush-bashing or trespassing.
  • Before you cross a river, a muddy track, or a steep hill, make sure you and your caravan are up for the challenge and has the right off-road capabilities.
  • Don’t take unnecessary risks. Off-road driving can be challenging if you are not prepared for it. Know your limits and take it slow as needed.
